Smith on Crutches – Strikeforce middleweight Scott Smith has revealed that one month prior to his beat down of Benji Radach at “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” his right knee was so jacked up that he was on crutches for a week.
“I was coaching a junior high wrestling team for my oldest son, and two of the heavyweights crashed into me, dislocating my knee,” stated Smith. “(A month prior to the fight) I was on crutches for about a week.”
A subsequent MRI showed that he had also stretched out many of the ligaments in his knee.
Smith claimed the pain was so excruciating that it created an inability for him to properly train and he, “Considered not even taking the fight because of it.”
However, in true Scott Smith fashion, he toughed it out and put on one of the guttiest performances inside an MMA cage.
“There was one point when I was coming forward, and he just clipped me, and I was seeing double vision,” Smith stated. “I was rocked at least three times where [the fight] was close to being stopped. One of the times is when I was holding on to his leg, and I was stalling out just to recover.”
There’s an old adage that states the most dangerous animal is a wounded one, and the fans have seen this Scott Smith before.
“That’s what the fans like to see – that’s what I like to do – is go out there and have wars,” Smith said.
Smith was down on all of the judges’ scorecards and out on his feet by the time the 3rdRound started. However, he once again showed Radach and the MMA world that he actually doesn’t start fighting until he is on the brink of defeat.
“That’s the whole reason I got into it,” said the 29-year-old fighter. “I like fighting, and [I hope] people enjoy watching that.”
