With everyone quick to push Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell into retirement, nobody has bothered to ask the former champion himself. However, one person who could hold the answer is his long-time trainer, John Hackleman.
“We’ll talk about it in the next week or so but no one is going to tell him [Liddell] when he’s going to stop fighting,” Hackleman told Around the Octagon.
Ironically, it was a former foe of Liddell’s who was put in the same situation years ago, as Randy Couture initally decided to retire following back-to-back losses to Chuck.
The rest of course is history, but there’s no doubt Liddell is one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time and he’s been in a lot of tough fights. Nobody can blame him if he doesn’t want to do it anymore, but knowing Liddell, that’s probably not the case.
When talking about Couture’s situation, Hackleman said, “He [Couture] lost to Chuck a couple of times then they said he was done again and he went to heavyweight and won another title. It’s up to Chuck.”
At 39 years of age, time definitely is not on Liddell’s side, but it wasn’t on Couture’s either.
