After dominating his Strikeforce debut in a catch-weight bout against MMA legend Frank Shamrock, Nick Diaz will look to press his luck against the relentless Scott Smith on June 6th in St. Louis, Missouri. The 180-pound catch-weight bout will co-headline Strikeforce’s second promotion of 2009.
“I think this is a great fight for me,” said Diaz in a statement released by Strikeforce Monday evening. “At the end of the day, I’m going to do what I have to do though and take him out.”
In his last outing, Diaz’ hand-speed and precision enabled him to slap Shamrock silly before the referee pulled him off of the fallen mixed martial arts icon in the 2ndRound of their contest. It was the most dominating performance of his controversial career.
Smith witnessed Diaz’ exhibition live on April 11th, as he once again rose from the brink of defeat to TKO Benji Radach earlier that evening. Like Diaz, Smith has finishing power, and “Hands of Steel” is confident he will be on point come fight time.
“Diaz is a great fighter,” Smith said of his opponent. “He’s going to come in there and out grapple me and out strike me so what I have to do is go in there and beat him up. I actually think this is more of a dangerous fight for him than it is for me.”
These two will play lead-in to the night’s featured bout, which also happens to be at a catch-weight. Welterweight sensation Jake Shields will pack on some pounds to take on former EliteXC middleweight champ Robbie Lawler at 182-lbs.
