Despite reports that Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem was set to return to the U.S. and defend his strap against the undefeated Brett Rogers, company brass state that is nothing more than MMA forum chatter.
“We’re looking at a lot of options for both Overeem and Rogers right now,” Strikeforce Director of Marketing Mike Afromowitz said. “Nothing has been signed for either of them.”
Although Afromowitz did not rule out the possibility of inking them to a 5Round affair for their June 6th show, he wanted to clarify that just because the higher-ups are brainstorming, it doesn’t mean this is a done deal.
Since defeating Paulo Buentello for the open Strikeforce heavyweight crown in November of 2007, Overeem has not set foot on U.S. soil, let alone a Strikeforce cage.
Since then, he has been perfect through his last four fights verseas, not including his domination of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at Dream.6, which resulted in a No Contest due to a couple illegal groin shots administered by Overeem.
As of now, here are the fighters Rumored to be fighting on Strikeforce’s June 6th card:
Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante vs. TBD
Booker DeRousse vs. James Wade
Torrance Taylor vs. Lyle Beerbohm
Alistair Overeem (Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion) vs. TBD
Kevin Randleman vs. Mike Whitehead
Joe Riggs vs. Phil Baroni
Nick Diaz vs. Scott Smith (Catch-Weight of 180 Pounds)
