Irvin Out Against McFedries, Foupa-Pokam In for UFC 98

Due to a knee injury, light heavyweight James Irvin will be forced to withdraw from his UFC 98 bout against Drew McFredries. The UFC wasted no time in finding a replacement as Xavier Foupa-Pokam will gladly step in with just 23 days before game time.

Foupa-Pokam was riding a seven-fight winning streak heading into his Octagon debut against Denis Kang at UFC 97 two weeks ago. Although the rookie fought valiantly, Kang was able to eek out a unanimous decision in a fight he badly needed.

Eager to get off the snide, Foupa-Pokam quickly obliged when his Bat Phone rang with UFC match-maker Joe Silva on the other end.

Although both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout, fight contracts have yet to be signed.

It is unknown whether McFedries’ bout with Foupa-Pokam will be demoted to a dark-match on the pay-per-view event, which would be understandable if the UFC decided to give more exposure to TUF 8 finalist Philpe Novar and bump his scrap against Kyle Bradley to the televised portion of the show.

As of now, here is how the fight card inside of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada stands:

Preliminary Bouts:

Chris Wilson vs. Brock Larson
David Kaplan vs. George Roop
Brandon Wolff vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
Houston Alexander vs. Andre Gusmao
Kyle Bradley vs. Phillipe Nover
Pat Barry vs. Tim Hague

Main Bouts:

Xavier Foupa-Pokam vs. Drew McFedries
Frank Edgar vs. Sean Sherk
Dan Miller vs. Yushin Okami
Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra
Lyoto Machida vs. Rashad Evans (UFC Light Heavyweight Champion)
