On this week’s edition of ESPN.com’s MMA LIVE, co-host and UFC lightweight Kenny Florian announced he will face Gray Maynard at UFC 118 in KenFlo’s backyard.
“There have been a lot of rumors. I can say right now that I did sign to fight Gray Maynard the other day,” Florian stated. “It’s gonna happen. Finally. In Boston. I’m very, very excited. I get a great opponent in Gray Maynard and finally fighting in my hometown.”
Florian owns an impressive 13-4 professional record and was last seen dominating Japanese sensation Takanori Gomi at “UFC Fight Night 21” last month. Including his 3rdRound rear-naked submission of Gomi, the former two-time top contender has now finished in 12 of his 13 wins.
Maynard, on the other hand, holds a perfect 9-0 mark however seven of his victories were handed to him by the judges sitting ring-side. The Xtreme Couture trained fighter posted an uneventful split decision win over Nate Diaz in his last outing.
It’s fitting that this top contender matchup takes place at UFC 118, as it’s believed the lightweight rematch between former king BJ Penn and current champ Frankie Edgar will headline the pay-per-view broadcast.
UFC 118 is slated to take place inside the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts on August 28th.
