UFC president Dana White has confirmed that he’s in the process of putting together a legendary matchup between Hall of Famer Randy Couture and boxing great James Toney for UFC 118 in Boston.

“It’s not a done deal yet,” White told a small group of reporters following WEC 48 on Saturday. “But yeah, I’m working on that.”

FightersOnly was the first to report that Couture would be welcoming Toney into the violent world of mixed martial arts, and White’s comments only solidified the chances of witnessing these two legends battle on August 28th.

Soon after Toney’s UFC signing was reported, it was Couture who immediately threw his name into the mix of potential opponents for the former boxing champion.

It’s been rumored the lightweight title rematch between champ Frankie Edgar and BJ Penn is also expected to be featured on the card. If Edgar vs. Penn II does indeed go down at UFC 118, then the Couture vs. Toney bout would be bumped to the co-main event slot.

Much has been made of White’s long awaited homecoming, and his desires to make sure UFC 118 at the TD Garden in Boston is a blockbuster event. If that’s the case, this wouldn’t be a bad set of featured bouts to showcase for the UFC’s debut in Massachusetts.
