After all the work, all the fighting and all the hoopla about getting the UFC and the sport of MMA sanctioned in New York, UFC president Dana White could be the one stumbling block.
There’s no doubt that the UFC’s past (pre-Zuffa) is the primary reason why the sport of mixed martial arts hasn’t been sanctioned in the world’s largest sports market.
“It is a violent sport, much more violent than other sports,” Bob Reilly, the largest opponent of the UFC recently told the media.
Yes, there is violence involved whenever there is fighting, but the UFC and many other promotions have done a good job of improving fighting safety through the years.
Unfortunately, that may not be enough.
The UFC’s primary spokesperson is Dana White, a person who many state legislators may find hard to like. When people think of the UFC, they associate White with it and there lies the problem.
“I don’t believe this [Dana White] is a person who really would be a person that you’d want to enter into business with,” Reilly said about Dana White.
White responded by saying, “There’s nothing I can do about that. Am I not going to be me?”
