The UFC has found a new opponent for Alessio Sakara as Thales Leites will step in for the injured Rousimar Palhares and meet the MMA vet in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at UFC 101 .
Leites confirmed his participation in the event Monday evening with MMAWeekly.com.
Late last week, intheguard.tv first reported Palhares had broken his leg in training and would be forced to pull out of the August 8th scrap at the Wachovia Center.
Palhares’ coach and trainer, Murilo Bustamante, said his protege would be riding the pine for the rest of the calendar year.
Leites just took UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva the distance at UFC 97. Although he extended the champ further than any other UFC fighter had, Leites was not impressive and was called out by numerous MMA enthusiasts for refusing to engage with the deadly striker.
“What is most important is getting back to fighting as soon as possible,” Leites said. “I know that I didn’t fight well, that things didn’t go as I wanted, so nothing is better than starting again.
“I know that the expectations will be enormous, because now I need to show that I deserve another shot at the title. But this is good, it will give more motivation.”
Sources close to the fight have claimed this is a loser-leave-town-match as the UFC continues to trim the fat from their roster.
