Le Still Has That Itch

Cung Le

Lights, camera, action! Mixed martial arts isn’t too far removed from the art of acting, perhaps that is why Strikeforce middleweight champ Cung Le hasn’t fought in nearly 15 months. He claims that no matter what extra curricular activities he’s involved in, MMA is always on his mind.

Since jacking the 185-pound strap from Frank Shamrock in March of 2008, Le has been an absentee champ, opting to display his talents on the big screen. This year, he will be featured in a total of four movies, including “Fighting,” which was released in theaters last month.

“Every time I’m on set, I have to be focused on whatever I’m doing,” Le said. “But I’m training while I’m on set, just to stay in shape. That pushes me because I’ve got to stay in good shape to potentially defend my title. If I get a little break, I’m doing something.”

It is hard to believe that with such a hectic schedule the Vietnamese-born striker would be able to excel in two demanding careers.  But he states he can make it work, he just has a couple more loose ends to tie up before he can get back to “work.”

“I definitely plan on returning to the cage as soon as possible, but right now I have a couple of things in the works,” he said.

And who does he expect Strikeforce to line up in front of him for his first-ever title defense once he’s ready to get back into the cage?

“Frank and I have that chemistry, and we both come to fight,” said Le. “Nick [Diaz] comes to fight. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It would be great to fight Frank again. I don’t know if Nick’s going to stay in the division. There’s a whole bunch of other great middleweights in the division, too.”

Don’t fret MMA fans, Le says that he is still hungry to get back to fighting, his first true love. He professes that it isn’t a matter of if, but WHEN and against WHO are the real questions.

“I definitely have that itch,” the champion stated.
