A report has surfaced that Nate Marquardt, the once heir apparent to Anderson Silva’s middleweight title, will begin his climb back up the ladder at UFC 116 when he meets Alessio Sakara in a pivotal 185-pound affair.

MMA analyst Joe Ferraro was the first to break the news on his Twitter page regarding the rumored bout.

It was the Jackson Submission trained fighter that was supposed to be facing Silva at UFC 112 for his belt, but those hopes went up in smoke after Chael Sonnen dominated Marquardt at UFC 109 to steal the top contender spot from him.

Sakara has won his last three contests inside the Octagon, including an impressive TKO victory over James Irvin at “UFC on Versus 1” in March.

Ferraro also reported that heavyweights Brendan Schaub and Chris Tuchscherer will be squaring off on the July 3rd show.

UFC 116 is believed to be headlined by the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin heavyweight title unification bout. The contest will mark Lesnar’s first fight in a year after miraculously surviving a life-threatening bout with diverticulitis.

Here are the fighters slated/rumored for the pay-per-view broadcast:

Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer
