It took the UFC no time in finding a replacement for injured Heath Herring as Cheick Kongo has agreed to step in on just 24 days notice to face Cain Velasquez at UFC 99.
Word broke late last night that Herring was dealing with an undisclosed injury and would be forced out of his fight in Germany. The UFC announced they would have a sub in place by today, and they kept their word.
Kongo was the first to make the announcement regarding his participation in the June 13th show via his Facebook page. The UFC later confirmed Kongo’s post.
Kongo will be pulling double-duty of sorts as he is fresh off of TKO’ing Antoni Hardonk at UFC 97 just last month. The heavyweight really didn’t have a choice to accept this fight as it provides him a tremendous opportunity to shoot up the divsion’s rankings.
Although he has won five of his last six inside the Octagon, an impressive win over the up-and-comer will make him a legit contender in the UFC’s weakest division.
The same goes for the 5-0 Velasquez. He has requested stiffer competition and here it is. If he can remain perfect, he could very well find himself in a 5Rounder sooner rather than later.
