Although the only thing Affliction has confirmed regarding their third MMA event is that it will once again be held inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA, the heavyweight of all heavyweight scraps has been Rumored, and today, WAMMA champ Fedor Emelianenko officially confirmed his participation in the August 1st extravaganza.
The heavyweight king told M-1Global.com about his upcoming fight with Josh Barnett.
“I am always 100 percent involved in the negotiations especially with regards to the Barnett fight,” Emelianenko stated. “We discussed this fight with the whole team (trainers, coaches, management), so as a team we agreed to a fight with Barnett.”
Although Emelianenko’s little bro, Aleksander, was schooled by Barnett back in the day at PrideFC, Fedor feels no added pressure to avenge the Emelianenko name.
“There is no desire for revenge,” Fedor calmly stated. “This is a totally separate fight.”
Emelianenko was the last seen putting former UFC heavyweight champ Andrei Arlovski to sleep in the 1stRound of their “Day of Reckoning” tussle. The Russian has been prefect through his last 25 fights, a run spanning over nine years.
Barnett was also victorious on that same January 24th card, however he allowed an under-matched Gilbert Yves to take him deep into fight the before finally TKO’ing him in the 3rdRound.
This heavyweight clash was the ace up Affliction’s sleeve. Although it is the most highly anticipated heavyweight fight in the world, the question is, what will be left for the start-up organization after they show their best hand? Furthermore, what if their meal ticket were to lose his first fight in over eight years?
Those are issues that Affliction VP Tom Atencio will have to look at down the line, however MMA fans are the winners today.
