Leading into their Strikeforce showdown at “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” Frank Shamrock stated that he intended to put the outspoken Nick Diaz through his MMA clinic. Unfortunately for the 36-year-old, it was the youngster that thoroughly schooled him. Apparently you can’t teach an old dog new tricks as Shamrock is now calling for a rematch.
“Of course the Diaz fight didn’t sit well with me so I definitely would like to get a rematch,” Shamrock stated on GracieFighter.com. “But props to Diaz he did a great job.”
Although Shamrock is 11 years Diaz’ elder, youth was served throughout their entire fight. Diaz overwhelmed the MMA legend with his length, speed and stand-up skills. The Cesar Gracie-trained fighter peppered Shamrock’s grill with unanswered jabs and strikes until he finally dropped him.
“Certain things didn’t go well leading up to that fight, during practice I popped a few ribs – it was really painful at the time but I thought it wouldn’t have a big impact on the fight, but as you could see it obviously did,” Shamrock said of his April 11th fight. “I could feel that I couldn’t get any power in my shots so I had to keep it standing.
“Before the fight, I was told that I had to rest my ribs for a while so I couldn’t work out … It was weird because usually I can go 3Rounds no problem but it was like my body started shutting down after the 1stRound. I think that fight was a blessing in disguise. I changed up my training schedule and bought a new stability ball which I’ve been working out on to help me with my balance.”
The bitter rivals were involved in numerous verbal spats before their scrap, but it was all respect after referee “Big” John McCarthy pulled Diaz off of the fallen Shamrock at 3:57 in the 2ndRound.
Even though the loss marked Shamrock’s third in his last four contests, he believes there are still a boatload of fights out there for him, particularly since Strikeforce will most likely not grant him a rematch.
“There’s still plenty of fights left out there for me before I call it a day, if Tito [Ortiz] wants to do it I wouldn’t mind kicking his ass again. I’m sure we could agree to a catch weight,” Shamrock stated of his former UFC foe.
