It is being reported that Japanese superstar Takanori Gomi is in the final stages of negotiations that would have the lightweight taking on Brett Cooper at “Affliction: Trilogy” on August 1st.

MMAWeekly.com confirmed with sources close to the situation that both fighters have agreed to a 165-pound scrap, however they are still ironing out the financial numbers.

Gomi, who was once the world’s most dominating lightweight fighter, has dropped two of his last three fights. He was finally able to get off the snide against Takashi Nakakura at “Shooto: Tradition Final” this past May.

His career appeared to spiral downward after Nick Diaz dominated him throughout their Pride FC bout in 2007. Although Diaz subbed him with a nasty gogoplata in the 2ndRound, Gomi was let off the hook with a ‘No Contest ‘ ruling after Diaz subsequently tested positive for “Mary Jane.”

Cooper disposed of Patrick Speight at Affliction’s second MMA event, “Day of Reckoning,” earlier this year. He holds a 9-4 overall record.

Thus far, here are the fighters Rumored to be fighting inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California:

Deividas Taurosevicius vs. TBD
Mark Hominick vs. TBD
Jay Hieron vs. Paul Daley
Ben Rothwell vs. Chase Gormley
Brett Cooper vs. Takanori Gomi
Vitor Belfort vs Jorge Santiago
Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Gegard Mousassi
Paul Buentello vs. Tim Sylvia
Josh Barnett vs. Fedor Emelianenko (WAMMA Heavyweight Champion)

UPDATED at 10:00AM PT on 6/11/09:

MMA FanHouse’s Ariel Helwani is reporting that the this bout is not gonna happen. Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio told the website that although they considered it, Gomi was not willing to fight at the higher 165-pound weight class.
