Although Cain Velasquez kept his perfect MMA record in tact, he is clearly not happy. Despite dominating the up-and-coming Cheick Kongo at UFC 99, Velasquez is irked that he allowed an opponent to take him the distance for the first time.

“I should have done better,” Velasquez stated after the scrap. “It wasn’t good enough for me. I know it wasn’t good enough for my coaches.”

Kongo owned a convincing reach advantage, especially with his lanky legs, and that is exactly why Velasquez was intent on taking this scrap to the mat. In fact, he was more than willing to eat a few punches in order to get close enough to clinch and wrestle with Kongo.

In the two opening rounds, Kongo dropped Velasquez early, however it appeared to be by design as he was ultimately able to throw, slam and beat Kongo like a rag doll.

To Velasquez’ surprise, Kongo’s face-to-fist defense appeared to pay off as the American Top Team fighter was unable to finish off his battered opponent.

Velazquez’ resume currently reads a perfect 6-0, with all but this past weekend’s fight coming via TKO. With his unanimous decision win over Kongo the only “blemish”, things are only going to get better for the division’s hottest prospect.
