Current UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and middleweight title holder Anderson Silva were both nominated in the “Best Fighter” category for the ESPN’s ESPY Awards on July 19th.
The other two contestants that were nominated were professional boxers Shane Mosley and Manny Pacquiao.
In previous years, former UFC 205-lb. champ Chuck Liddell and current welterweight king Georges St-Pierre were nominated to receive the award, however both were outdone by their boxing counterparts.
Although this is the first year that MMA has had two representatives nominated in the same year, chances are that Pacquiao will take home the award after his destruction of Oscar De La Hoya, perhaps ending the Golden Boy’s illustrious boxing career.
However, that shouldn’t discourage anyone from voting. Although the odds are against us, we need to keep supporting MMA so we can eventually take home one of these mainstream awards!
