Fresh off his loss to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia confirmed early Saturday morning that he will be facing the gritty Alan Belcher in his next bout.
We don’t speak or read Portuguese here at 5thRound, however we were able to crack the code as it’s clear Maia will be fighting at UFC Fight Night 22 on September 15th against Belcher.
The possibility of a bout with Belcher was first reported by Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.
In case you don’t recall, Maia was the co-star to Anderson Silva’s antics at UFC 112 last month. After Silva coasted to another unanimous decision victory, UFC president Dana White got up and left during the 4thRound because he was so disgusted with Silva’s circus act.
Belcher is coming off an impressive win at UFC 113 over Patrick Cote in front of his home crowd in Montreal. Belcher submitted the former No. 1 contender via rear-naked choke in the 2ndRound of their contest.
With a win over Maia, Belcher could catapult himself into the title discussion. Given that Maia already had his shot at the strap, he would likely have to rattle off an impressive win streak to get back into a championship bout.
