Overeem to Defend Title at "Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg"

Today, Strikeforce announced that heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will be defending his title against Fabricio Werdum at “Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg” on August 15th. This will be the third 5Round affair taking place inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California that evening.

Since defeating Paulo Buentello for the open Strikeforce heavyweight crown in November of 2007, Overeem has not set foot on U.S. soil, let alone a Strikeforce cage.

Following that W, he has been perfect through his last four fights overseas, not including his domination of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at Dream.6, which resulted in a ‘No Contest’ due to a couple of illegal groin shots administered by Overeem.

Werdum was recently ousted from the UFC following his 1stRound TKO loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 90 last October. Before that contest, Werdum was thought of as a future contender to the UFC’s heavyweight crown. However, the organization soured on him after the devastating loss.

Here is the tentative lineup that is scheduled to appear on the Showtime broadcast:

Erin Toughill vs. TBD
Roger Gracie vs. TBD
Nick Diaz vs. Joe Riggs
Fabricio Werdum vs. Alistair Overeem (Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion)
Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson (Strikeforce Lightweight Champion)
Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos vs. Gina Carano (Open Strikeforce Women’s Title)
