“Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” and “UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin”: Who’s Name is Missing?

It could have been the biggest seven-day span mixed martial arts fans had ever experienced. Yet for some auspicious reason, Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem faced Brett Rogers last month instead of waiting to defend his title this weekend against Fedor Emelianenko.

Since rewarding Rogers with his first professional blemish last November for daring to step into the cage with him, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has stuck to his guns by insisting Werdum gets next dibs at trying to hand Fedor his first loss in over nine years.

No matter how loudly the fans complained, and despite the rumors of lagging ticket sales, Coker ain’t budging from his master plan. It’s widely expected that if Emelianenko is able to leave his scrap against the Brazilian victorious and unscathed, he would then move on to fight Overeem for his title in Strikeforce’s first pay-per-view event.

While this portion of the blueprint has leaked, nobody – including Scotty himself – knows what Team Fedor intends to do following the highly anticipated matchup. Emelianenko hits the MMA free agent market the very second his battle with Ubereem is complete – or some other heavyweight if this “dodging” trend between the two continues.

Regardless, three out of the world’s four best heavyweights competing within one week of each other is a treat for fans, particularly since Emelianenko’s scrap on Showtime won’t cost $44.95 to watch and specifically because Lesnar and Carwin have guaranteed an explosive 4th of July weekend.

The action kicks off this Saturday inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” airs on Showtime at 10PM ET/PT, so you’ll only be able to witness Fedor’s genius in real time if you have access to an east coast feed.

UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin” will be jumping off inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas the following Saturday on PPV.
