Former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh “Insert Nickname Here” Thomson would prefer to lose his “Punk” title altogether, but he understands that it’s also part of the game.
The American Kickboxing Academy trained fighter was on top of the world after he thoroughly dominated current lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez at “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson” almost two years ago.
However, “El Nino” turned the tables on him in their re-match, as it was Melendez who dominated Thomson for the better part of 5Rounds at “Strikeforce: Evolution” this past December.
It was Thomson’s first fight in almost 15 months after coming back from injury, and although he probably would’ve beaten any other lightweight under the Strikeforce banner, he was up against a much improved Melendez.
Now, a more mature Thomson wants to show that his fight game has also grown up.
“It’s a nickname I got when I was younger,” the “Punk” told MMAJunkie Radio. “I try to shake it, but it sticks.”
Thomson will take on Pat Healy this Saturday night at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” in a bout that he hopes will get him back on track.
