After openly rooting for Fedor Emelianenko to post a knockout victory over Fabricio Werdum inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA, Alistair Overeem now finds himself in the unlikely position of defending his title against the man most considered was thoroughly out of his element.
“I hope Fedor will win the fight. I’m a big fan of his fighting and I’m looking forward to fighting him myself,” Alistair Overeem stated during Saturday night’s broadcast. “Whoever wins tonight, I want next.”
See, what had happened…
While Team Fedor, Ubereem, Strikeforce, Showtime and CBS were hoping for a landslide win to launch talks of the biggest fight in MMA history going down in the company’s first pay-per-view broadcast, Werdum emphatically screamed ‘NYET!’
It took Werdum all of :69 seconds to submit Emelianenko with a triangle choke/armbar on Saturday night. The win should shoot the Brazilian up the heavyweight rankings, however leaves Fedor with his first loss in nearly a decade and one bout remaining on his Strikeforce deal.
