After letting his first loss in a nearly a decade marinate for a bit, Fedor Emelianenko & Co. now have their sights set on a rematch with Fabricio Werdum in what could be his last contest for Strikeforce … ever.
“I think a rematch with Werdum will bring a different outcome than what we witnessed [Saturday] evening and would be in the best interests of the promotions and for the sport. This is an opportunity for us to learn and evolve,” Fedor’s manager Vadim Finkelchtein and M-1 Global’s president said.
According to M-1 Global’s website, Team Fedor is looking for a rematch sometime in the fall – with September or October as the target months for “The Last Emperor’s” return.
Werdum was a heavy underdog when he stepped into the cage this past Saturday, however shocked the MMA world when he forced Emelianenko to tap out at “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” inside the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The loss derailed Strikeforce’s plans of putting together the biggest fight in the promotion’s history with its heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem sitting front and center, fully prepared to greet Fedor had he walked away victorious.
Although it would be logical for Werdum’s next fight to be for Overeem’s title, the Brazilian said he would prefer to follow up the biggest win of his career with an instant rematch with Fedor. Werdum is anxious to prove his win over the Russian wasn’t a fluke and would love the chance to legitimize it by going back-to-back.
“Next time, [I’d like a re-match with] Fedor,” Werdum said of his immediate future. “Maybe here [in San Jose], maybe in Russia – no problem. I like Fedor, [I’d] like for everybody to like Fedor. I’m a fan of Fedor, he’s the best in the world.”
The website goes on to say that “Fedor vs. Werdum II” taking place in the fall would “appeal” to Team Fedor -so it looks like we’ll be seeing them this autumn.
