With all the commotion surrounding “UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin,” Dream has quietly put together a small – yet solid – fight card that will feature some of the world’s best mixed martial artists. It has just been confirmed Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem will face Ricco Rodriguez at Dream.15.
A source close to the situation told MMAJunkie.com that bout agreements for the July 10th event should be signed and submitted shortly. The show takes place inside the Saitama Super Arena in Japan and is expected to be broadcast live on HDNet in North America.
Since being released by the UFC in 2003, Rodriguez has managed to rattle off 13 wins in his last 15 professional outings. Despite enduring substance abuse and weight issues, the 32-year-old has managed to find a nice groove by posting seven straight victories.
Overeem was expected to defend his Strikeforce title against Fedor Emelianenko had the Russian held up his end of the bargain. However, it appears Overeem will take a non-title warm-up bout with the Japanese promotion before figuring out his next move stateside.
Overeem owns a 33-11 pro record and has been prefect through his last eight scraps, less one No Contest to Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.
Here is the talented roster that will be participating in the highly anticipated card:
Light Heavyweight Grand Prix (Four-Man Tournament):
Melvin Manhoef vs. Tatsuya Mizuno
Gegard Mousasi vs. Jake O’Brien
Alistair Overeem vs. Ricco Rodriguez
Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante vs. Katsunori Kikuno
Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Shina Aoki (Dream Lightweight Champion)
