According to reports, Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal will make his first Strikeforce light heavyweight title defense against Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante on August 21st.
Company brass confirmed King Mo’s participation in the Houston, Texas event during their “Strikeforce: Los Angeles” show, however FiveOuncesofPain.com reported Thursday that Feijao will be granted first dibs at Lawal’s newly minted crown.
When former champ Renato “Babalu” Sobral defeated Robbie Lawler last month, the winner was promised a title shot in their next outing. However, after his uneventful decision win, Babalu said he prefers a fight with Dan Henderson before challenging his Reign Training Center amigo for his hardware.
In steps Cavalcante, who rebounded nicely from an upset TKO loss to Mike Pyle in his Strikeforce debut. The talented Brazilian has since gone on to put down Aaron Rosa and more recently Antwain Britt at “Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery” in May.
All nine of his career victories have come via violent finishes, with eight of them by way of knockout.
Lawal is an NCAA Division II national wrestling champion who captured countless amateur titles before entering MMA. He was last seen showcasing his superior ground game against former champion Gegard Mousasi at “Strikeforce: Nashville” en route to jacking the 205-pound belt.
No official announcement has been made by the organization, however here are the bouts rumored/slated for the Showtime broadcast:
