Brock Lesnar submitted his application for world’s best heavyweight Saturday night at UFC 116. After his comeback victory over Shane Carwin to unify the Octagon crown, Lesnar claimed his resume should stand above all others for the coveted moniker.
“I’m the greatest. I’m the champ,” Lesnar told ESPN. “What can you say? I don’t think there are question marks behind my name anymore. I showed a lot of heart and like I said, I’m just really blessed to be here.”
The only other man in the conversation is Strikeforce/M-1 Global’s Fedor Emelianenko, who was considered the planet’s top dog until his shocking upset loss to Fabricio Werdum just eight days ago. While MMA purists scoff at the notion that a former WWE employee will take over their most powerful division, it’s an undeniable fact after witnessing what went down on The Las Vegas Strip.
“I probably came out a little too cool in the 1stRound,” Lesnar admitted. “I’m not happy about the 1stRound at all. We spent a lot of time with [Peter Welch] and I didn’t show my skills very well. Shane won the 1stRound, there’s no doubt about that, but we sealed the deal in the 2ndRound.
“That’s what it’s all about.”
