UFC Lightweight Sean Sherk

According to sources close the situation, the UFC has booked a pivotal lightweight bout between former champion Sean Sherk and the up-and-coming Evan Dunham for UFC 119.

MMAJunkie and MMAWeekly reported both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout and are expected to sign the papers shortly. The contest had been heavily rumored since the event was announced a few months back.

It’s been a bumpy ride for Sherk, who was once the UFC’s top 155-pounder. After getting stripped of his lightweight title in 2007 after testing positive for a banned substance, he was steamrolled by then-champ BJ Penn at UFC 84 in his return.

Sherk hasn’t been seen inside an Octagon since losing to current champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 98 in May of 2009. If he’s able to post an impressive win over an athlete as talented as Dunham, expect for Sherk to shoot up the ladder once again.

Dunham trains out of the famed Xtreme Couture camp in Las Vegas and currently owns a perfect 11-0 record. The youngster holds wins over Marcus Aurelio, Efrain Escudero and Tyson Griffin – who he defeated at UFC 115 just last month.

UFC 119 is scheduled to take place September 25th at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Here are the contestants rumored for the pay-per-view broadcast:

Melvin Guillard vs. Jeremy Stephens
C.B. Dollaway vs. Joe Doerkson
Matt Mitrione vs. Joey Beltran
Evan Dunham and Sean Sherk
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
