UFC welterweight Georges St-Pierre

UFC welterweight king Georges St-Pierre and lightweight champion Frankie Edgar are both up for ESPY Awards tonight on ESPN.

Edgar’s nomination marks the first for an MMA athlete outside of the “Best Fighter” category. The Jersey Boy’s shocking victory over former title holder BJ Penn got him an ESPY nomination for “Best Upset.”

Frankie has been the biggest underdog to come in thus far in 2010, as Penn was a heavy 8-to-1 favorite to retain his crown at UFC 112 this past March.

This is St-Pierre’s second ESPY nomination for “Best Fighter.” He will be going up against the category’s last two winners, boxing greats Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

GSP has thoroughly trounced his last seven opponents en route to becoming the planet’s top 170-pounder. Earning him the nod this year were his dominating performances against the aforementioned Penn, Thiago Alves and Dan Hardy.

The 2010 ESPYS air live tonight on ESPN beginning at 9PM ET/6PM PT. Seth Myers from ‘Saturday Night Live’ will be hosting this year’s show, which takes place inside the NOKIA Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles.
