Georges St-Pierre and Frankie Edgar at ESPYs

Mixed martial arts had two fighters nominated at this year’s ESPY Awards, with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre up for the “Best Fighter” award and newly crowned lightweight champ Frankie Edgar in the “Best Upset” category.

However, Northern Iowa’s upset over the Kansas Jayhawks in last year’s NCAA Tournament took home the “Best Upset” award, beating out Edgar’s stunning win over BJ Penn at UFC 112 this past April.

St-Pierre went up against some stiff competition, as the last two winners in his category were nominated once again. Manny Pacquiao (2009) and Floyd Mayweather Jr (2008) were both up for the award this year. This was GSP’s second go around at the ESPYs.

Unfortunately for the French-Canadian, he too struck out as Mayweather Jr. beat him for a second time to capture 2010’s “Best Fighter” award.

“Not my night, but congratulations to Floyd May weather. Thanks again to all my fans for your support,” St-Pierre Tweeted shortly after receiving word.

As the old saying goes, better luck next year.
