While most fighters arrange for the swankiest night clubs to host their celebratory post-fight parties, Chael Sonnen has proven once again that he isn’t walking down the sane, ahem same, path as the rest of us.
Not only has he volunteered to be Anderson Silva’s punching bag at UFC 117, but the 3.5-to-1 underdog hasn’t done himself any favors with his nonstop chatter. Although Sonnen has run the gamut with his verbal assault, the Team Quest trained fighter took a break from his diversified disses to actually pay the 185-pound king a complement.
“He’s a scary fighter. There’s just not a lot of fighters you can say that about that are just flat-out scary,” Sonnen stated during Tuesday’s conference call. “He’s very mean. He’s vicious. He’s sharp, in that he’s so skinny and long (that) his elbows, knees and fists are sharp.”
However, the props quickly stopped there as the part-time realtor proceeded to question the validity behind Silva’s hand-picked Octagon accomplishments.
“They pick their fights and they take easy fights, fighting Math teachers from Ohio or one-legged guys from Canada,” Sonnen said of Anderson & Co. “There’s going to be a tremendous difference when he gets in with an All-American from Portland, Oregon.”
Clearly there is a method behind Sonnen’s madness. Most believe he’s simply selling the pay-per-view broadcast, which wouldn’t be the dumbest thing in the world considering the headliner no hablo ingles (allegedly). While flapping his gums may significantly increase the thickness of his wallet, Sonnen also realizes it won’t be the only thing leaving Oracle Arena in Oakland, California swollen.
“He’s going to hurt me really bad on August 7th,” Sonnen matter-of-factly stated. “I’m confident that I can deal with the pain, walk through it, go to the hospital that night and leave with the championship belt anyway.”
If you’re planning on being in the Oaktown area, please make sure to drop by Sonnen’s after party. Here’s a video promo for the shindig. It definitely looks like it’s gonna be crunk:
