Middleweight Alan Belcher has just confirmed that a detached retina has forced him out of his main event scrap against Demian Maia at “UFC Fight Night 22” on September 15th.
Here is what Blecher posted on his Twitter account on Sunday:
“While I was in brazil I started losing my vision in my right eye. I saw a dr that told me to go back to us immediately. My friend/surgeon from biloxi got me an emergency surgery scheduled in alabama now just trying to recover. No contact for 6 weeks. Sorry to my trainers. Sorry to ufc & demian Maia, I know he has been training specifically for me. Sorry to my fans as well. As long as I get released from dr I will try to make ufn 22 to see my fans and watch the fights
It’s a detached retina. Had to put a buckle around my eye. I’ll be back and better than ever.”
Belcher is coming off an impressive win at UFC 113 over Patrick Cote in front of his home crowd in Montreal. Belcher submitted the former No. 1 contender via rear-naked choke in the 2ndRound of their contest.
No word from the UFC regarding Maia’s future and the fate of “UFC Fight Night 22.”
