On Thursday, lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and former king BJ Penn took to their cell phones and hosted a pre-fight UFC 118 conference call to promote their August 28th rematch.
Penn and Edgar battled for 25 grueling minutes in some of the most difficult rounds to score in mixed martial arts history. One extra jab here or a flurry there could have meant the difference between leaving UFC 112 with Octagon gold or not.
Edgar did a masterful job in using his cat-like quickness to engage just long enough to land shots, while avoiding damage in return. The Jersey boy’s speed and movement kept Penn off balance for much of the contest, appearing to frustrate the former title holder as they entered the championship rounds.
When the dust settled, Edgar shocked the world and snatched the lightweight title from the planet’s baddest 155-pounder.
In addition to discussing their highly anticipated mulligan, both fighters addressed the MMA debut of boxing legend James Toney, who will be meeting UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture in the card’s co-main event.
