Following Frankie Edgar’s shocking upset victory at UFC 112, talk started to trickle out of BJ Penn’s camp that fans were deprived of seeing “The Prodigy” at his best. Now, the former king is fully motivated to get his crown back and he has Edgar to thank for it.

Penn’s motivation started as soon as veteran voice of the Octagon Bruce Buffer announced the winner of their title bout in April. It instantly lit a fire underneath him and has fueled him throughout the most intense training camp of his life.

“You want a cookie for the victory you got over me that night? Have all your boys putting you on their shoulder and dance you around at the judges and try to steal the victory and do stuff like that,” Penn said during Spike TV’s Countdown to UFC 118 “Whatever man, that’s the man you are. Okay, I got you. It’s a joke.

“He showed his true colors right off the bat when he did that, and the color was yellow.”

There has been a lot made of Penn’s state of mind going into the highly anticipated showdown. Questions concerning whether he takes his opponents and training seriously have surfaced quite a bit in the past. Although he’s appeared to fade in the later rounds of some of his fights, that doesn’t seem like it’ll be a problem come game time.

“I’m going to have to show Frankie Edgar that I belong in the fight with him and I’m really going to enjoy doing that,” Penn stated. “He’s gonna see speed, he’s gonna see strength and he’s gonna see somebody coming to finish the fight. That’s what he’s gonna see.”

We’ll see if the Hawaiian will be able to catch the upset specialist during their 5Round affair this evening at UFC 118 inside TD Garden in Boston.
