It took him one extra fight but Gray “The Bully” Maynard has secured his ticket to the next UFC lightweight title bout as he easily outpointed hometown favorite Kenny Florian at UFC 118 on Saturday night.
Things went exactly as planned as Maynard forced Florian to chase him around the Octagon before shooting in and securing a takedown at some point in every round.
Maynard clearly paid attention to UFC president Dana White’s comments during the week as he stated multiple times that as long as the Xtreme Couture fighter had his hand raised he would get a title shot, regardless of how it came.
“My thing is if [Gray] beats Kenny Florian whether he submits him, finishes him or squeaks out a close decision, you beat Kenny Florian, definitely. You’re in there,” White said.
Now that his future is set, Maynard plans on taking the rest of the night off and enjoying the spot that he now finds himself in as he promises to sit in the front row, have a Bud Light and score some popcorn.
Remember, Maynard already owns a victory over current UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and would relish the opportunity to face a motivated BJ Penn.
