It was officially announced yesterday that CBS and EliteXC had agreed to a multi-year deal that will air EliteXC events on the major network channel. According to the press release, “CBS will broadcast four MMA events per year, produced by ProElite’s EliteXC fight division, as two-hour live prime-time specials targeted for Saturday nights.” To show how big of an announcement this was, ESPN’s SportsCenter announced it during the show.

For those who didn’t know, CBS also owns the Showtime premium cable channel that EliteXC had been airing their events on prior to the new partnership. There’s no word yet on whether or not EliteXC would still be airing some of their cards on Showtime but it would make sense that they would, with at least the ShoXC Challenger Series.
According to a report on the Los Angeles Times, Saturday night prime-time television has been a graveyard in recent years for ratings, so the risk for CBS is minimal. If EliteXC absolutely tanks, CBS could drop the show.
Outside of just the television deal, ProElite’s website is also going to be working with CBSSports.com and create some interactive content and an online community as well.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for EliteXC, if they can put together a couple of big cards featuring top stars like Kimbo Slice and Jake Shields, they’ll have no problem pulling the ratings that they need to remain on the network.
