Word on the street is, former WEC featherweight champ turned 135-pounder Urijah Faber will return to action against Japanese star Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 52 on November 11th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The bantamweights were originally slated to square off at WEC 50 last month, however “The California Kid” was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury. MMAWeekly.com confirmed with sources close to the situation today that bout agreements should be signed and submitted shortly.
After an unprecedented featherweight title run, Faber lost his belt to Mike Brown at WEC 36 and followed it up with a unanimous decision loss in their mulligan at WEC 41. What sealed the bantamweight deal for Faber must have been when reigning 145-pound king Jose Aldo unleashed a whooping on his left thigh.
Although Faber has dropped three of his last five contests, all coming in championship scraps, he remains the organization’s most popular and recognizable athlete.
Mizugaki holds a respectable 13-4-2 record, however made quite the splash in his WEC debut as a last-minute replacement to challenge then champ Miguel Torres for the bantamweight crown. Despite dropping a unanimous decision, the Japanese stud won over many stateside fans with his Rocky Balboa-esque performance.
No venue has been rumored for the yet-to-be announced show. However, it’s believed Faber/Mizugaki will serve as the card’s co-main event. Former bantamweight champion Brian Bowles is expected to face Wagnney Fabiano in Sin City as well.
