It is being reported that light heavyweight Matt Hamill has recently suffered a knee injury that will require him to miss his UFC 102 bout against Brandon Vera. The organization wasted no time in finding a replacement as Krzysztof Soszynski has agreed to sub on August 29th.
Sherdog.com was the first to report Hamill’s status, however there has been no official word from the UFC regarding the matter.
“(It’s) just a meniscus tear,” Hamill’s trainer, Duff Holmes, told MMAjunkie.com. “He’s going for a scope tomorrow, and we’ll be back to training after three or four weeks of rehab.
“It was something that just crept up on us and was getting worse and worse. It was really affecting his ability to go to the ground and was giving out on him. … We are very disappointed with having to pull out, and we were really looking forward to the fight with Vera. He is a true mixed martial artist, and we were eager to test Matt against someone of his abilities.”
Soszynski holds an 18-8-1 professional record, and has been prefect in all three of his Octagon appearances. The Team Quest-trained fighter has looked impressive since losing in the eighth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” as he has finished in all of his UFC contests.
Vera’s roller-coaster of a career includes losses in three of his last five bouts. Although he holds a respectable 10-3 pro mark, another loss here could have him in some hot water with the planet’s biggest MMA organization.
UFC 102 will be jumping off inside the Rose Center in Portland, Oregon and will be headlined by a heavyweight scrap between former UFC champions Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Here is the updated roster for the UFC’s debut in the City of Roses:
