The UFC has just announced that former middleweight champion Rich Franklin will be getting a mulligan against former PrideFC champ Dan Henderson at UFC 103 in Dallas, Texas. It is believed that the two will square off in a light heavyweight affair.
Hendo took a controversial split decision over the former math teacher in their first meeting at UFC 93 in Dublin, Ireland.
Since that light heavyweight scrap, each has fought just once. Henderson is fresh off one of the most devastating knockout wins in his career as he slapped Michael Bisping silly last weekend at UFC 100.
Franklin most recently took a unanimous decision victory over Wanderlei Silva in a 195-pound catchweight bout at UFC 99 in Cologne, Germany last month.
This is a rather interesting match-up as both fighters have expressed interest in challenging for titles in different weight classes. Henderson has been vying for a rematch against reigning UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva. Meanwhile, Franklin has been shooting up the light heavyweight ladder for a shot at Lyoto Machida’s strap.
Clearly disappointing news for Hendo as he was expecting a title shot the next time he stepped into the Octagon, because Bisping was promised a 5Round bout had he defeated the MMA veteran.
Opening for this main event will be a heavyweight battle between Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, who officially re-upped with the organization last week, and Junior Dos Santos.
Here are the fighters slated to be competing in the September 19th show:
Aaron Simpson vs. TBD
Steve Steinbeiss vs. TBD
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Matt Wiman
Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
Drew McFedries and Tomasz Drawl
Sean Sherk vs. Gleison Tibau
