When you’re donning championship gold, it’s natural that your peers will call for a shot at your head. It’s nothing personal, but it comes with the territory when you’re the top dog. That’s the case with Strikeforce welterweight champ Nick Diaz, as Paul Daley would love nothing better than an opportunity to dethrone the king – with all due respect, of course.

“Nick Diaz – great fighter. It took me a while to come round to it. As a person people say he’s a bit of a (expletive), that sort of stuff, but as a fighter I’m a huge Nick Diaz fan,” Daley told MMAWeekly.com. “A lot of people say stuff about his boxing and everything, I think he’s a fantastic boxer. He’s one of my favorite fighters at the moment.”

Diaz is slated to make his first title defense against mortal enemy KJ Noons on October 9th, so a potential shootout isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. At the same time, Daley’s immediate calendar is jammed with a fight against Jorge Masvidal tonight at Shark Fights 13.

While the Brit is impressed with Diaz’s game, MMA’s sucker punch specialist couldn’t say the same thing about his golden boy opponent.

“K.J. Noons, I wouldn’t say he’s one of my favorite fighters. I don’t think too much of him, and I think Nick Diaz should put him away pretty easily,” Daley added.

Since getting fired by the UFC, it was believed Daley would be headed straight for Strikeforce. While his signing was a tad premature, it doesn’t mean he hasn’t stopped thinking about a potential scrap against the pothead Folker.

“We’ll see where I’m at because I’d love to fight Nick Diaz,” Daley said. “Outside of the UFC, he’s probably the biggest name out there, most highly rated. I think he’s a badass, and I want to test myself.

“I’m looking for fights that are going to motivate me. I think Nick Diaz would be a great fight for me. If that could happen at some point in the future, I’d really look forward to it.”
