UFC Lightweight Champ BJ Penn

To say yesterday’s “BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes III” announcement was greeted with a lukewarm response would be an understatement. The former lightweight king says it wasn’t the UFC’s first choice either, but it was an opportunity Penn couldn’t pass on when Octagon president Dana White came calling.

“Dana offered me a fight a couple days ago on Sunday because he said a lightweight guy I was gonna fight was hurt,” Penn stated. “He couldn’t take the fight so Dana offered me a fight I couldn’t resist.”

Although the planet’s former top lightweight didn’t specifically confirm his scrap with Hughes, he mentions his current weight, which would indicate he’s monitoring the need to pack on more pounds in order to compete against the bigger Hall of Famer. It’s been reported the former welterweight champion cuts down from 185ish pounds in order to make the weight.

“I’m 165-pounds right now, I didn’t go out since my last fight,” Penn added. “I just came back and kept training so I’m in shape. I’m gonna keep trying to train as hard as I can and make whatever adjustments that I have to make to my training schedule and my camp.

“Dana offered me a fight I couldn’t refuse and I’m gonna take it.”

As if it were a scene straight out of The Godfather…
