It appears all the back and forth banter between Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Frank Mir can be chalked up to a case of the big misunderstandings. According to the former Pride superstar, he was merely stating facts when he highlighted his last-minute status for their upcoming UFC 119 battle.
“That’s not true. I didn’t talk to Frank Mir when I mentioned being unprepared,” Cro Cop told FightersOnly. “I was talking to my fans and the UFC fans, just for them to respect the fact that I was taking the challenge because of them, and at late notice. I only stated a fact.
“My wife is pregnant, I am sick of traveling all round the world, so many things … the UFC called me and asked if I can do them a favor, I said ‘yes.'”
Cro Cop was last seen submitting Pat Barry with a 3rdRound rear-naked choke at UFC 115 in mid-June. The last time the 36-year-old took a scrap on such a quick turnaround was following his TKO win over Mostapha Al-Turk at UFC 99 in June 2009.
He suffered a devastating loss to Junior dos Santos just three months later at UFC 103.
Mir, on the other hand, is looking to bounce back from his loss to Shane Carwin at UFC 111 in late March. Nearly six months will have passed by the time he faces CC on September 25th, so the Brazilian jiu jitsu ace will be well rested when the cage door slams shut. It was another fact Mirko wanted to spotlight.
“He had a longer time to prepare, but it doesn’t have to mean anything,” Cro Cop stated. “The moment I accepted the fight, there are no excuses for me. It’s my problem and I don’t want people to think I am searching for some alibi or something.”
Did someone just say alibi?
The two will collide inside the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The event marks the Octagon’s debut in the Hoosier state. It has not been confirmed whether the Wildcats hotties will be in attendance.
