The ink from UFC 122‘s official event poster is barely dry, yet it is already irrelevant if MMAWeekly’s report holds true. According to the outlet, Vitor Belfort has once again suffered an injury and will be forced out of another main event. This time, Nate Marquardt will sub in to face Yushin Okami in Germany.
Okami, on the other hand, is fresh off a split decision win over Mark Munoz at “UFC on Versus 2.” The talented Japanese star has won five of his last six scraps. His only loss during the stretch came to the aforementioned Sonnen.
Octagon brass confirmed earlier this week the Belfort/Okami victor would be granted a title shot in 2011. Given Marquardt’s resume and prior top contender status, it’s likely that won’t change. The question is if the winner will leapfrog Sonnen for next dibs at Anderson Silva’s middleweight strap given his pending suspension.
Weekly was not able to confirm what injury forced Belfort out of the November 13th meeting. He had to withdraw from his UFC 112 championship bout with Silva this past April to repair his banged up shoulder.
