UFC Middleweight Chris Leben

The UFC’s New Year’s Day extravaganza is starting to take shape, as we learned yesterday that Anderson Silva will defend his middleweight title against Vitor Belfort in the main event at UFC 125.

MMAJunkie has learned from a source close to the situation that Chris Leben and Brian Stann will also square-off in a 185-pound contest that evening, which is expected to be featured in the televised portion of the pay-per-view broadcast.

Although Leben had been hoping for a bout with former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva, he’ll have to settle for the streaking Stann. “The Crippler” is coming off the biggest win of his career, as he submitted Japanese star Yoshihiro Akiyama in the 3rdRound at UFC 116.

Stann has won in 3 of his last 4 Octagon appearances. The former WEC light heavyweight champ is hoping another impressive finish will place him in the thick of middleweight title hunt.

UFC 125 is tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2011 and all signs point to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada as the probable venue.

Here are the fighters rumored/expected to fight on New Year’s Day:

Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva
Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion)
