As unfortunate as Chael Sonnen’s predicament is, newly-crowned middleweight top contender Vitor Belfort ain’t about to complain for getting to the front of the line. Courtesy of Sonnen’s alleged PED abuse, he leapfrogged into a title scrap with reigning king Anderson Silva. While UFC president Dana White didn’t mention when or where the Brazilians will battle, Belfort predicts fireworks will be flying in Vegas on New Year’s.
“Dana just gave me one of the best presents ever,” Belfort told MMANewsLeak.com. “All these rumors that I’m hurt, I’m not hurt. I’m healthy. I was running from all you [media] guys because it has to be top secret.”
Belfort was slated to face Yushin Okami at UFC 122 on November 13th to determine who gets next dibs at the crown. All it took was some “abnormally high levels of testosterone” and now he doesn’t need to bother fighting the talented Japanese stud. Belfort was in mid-camp form when his Bat Phone rang, but will get to ease up on the gas pedal now that his appointment has been pushed back.
“I’m just training, back in my routine,” Belfort stated. “Nothing changed, it’s just a better picture for myself and for all the fans.
“I’m gonna readjust the camp. Not push too hard right now, I’m just going to have to maintain. I have been studying a lot of his fights. It’s going to be a good brawl. I’m so excited, happy to be fighting for the title in my hometown.”
The Brazilian’s will battle in Brazil???
“Vegas is my hometown, I live here now,” he clarified.
Oh, so The Las Vegas Strip will host your 185-pound contest? When exactly will this be going down?
“It sounds like January 1st or New Year’s Eve,” Belfort added. “It’s going to be the best New Year’s Eve of my life.”
UFC 125 is rumored to be jumping off inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena on the first day of 2011.
