Outside of his current state of silence, Chael Sonnen has never been one to bite his tongue. Well, former Pride middleweight champ Wanderlei Silva just released a video where he’s seen schooling the talkative wrestler in regards to proper trash talking etiquette, while Sonnen remained quiet during the scolding.
Prior to last week’s “UFC Fight Night 22” event in Austin, Texas, Silva and Sonnen made an appearance together for an autograph signing. After the fan-friendly fighters signed numerous signatures and snapped countless pictures, the pair rode back in a van with each other and that’s when class went in session.
While “The Axe Murderer” said he appreciated the way Sonnen promoted his fight with 185-pound champion Anderson Silva for UFC 117, Wandy suggested he not attack people that aren’t directly in his sights – namely, the Nogueira brothers because of their past contributions to the sport of mixed martial arts.
“You make a challenge. You sell the fight, you make a promotion, it’s good. But you need to be careful talking about some things, like Brazil. You’re talking bad things about Brazil. You don’t know Brazil. When there is something you don’t know, you need to respect that thing.
You’ve been to Brazil, but I am Brazilian. Like you’ve been talking about the Nogueira brothers. These guys are the history of the sport, we have to respect these guys. The promotion is good, but you need to respect some things. These guys need respect. We need to have a good conduct about that. Don’t do that anymore.
In Brazil we have a saying, ‘You have respect, you don’t lose your teeth.’ In Brazil we say that. Give respect. Because we don’t know about the future, no?”
Sure our transcription of the conversation may seem intense, but there’s nothing like watching it with your own eyes. Wandy Smack Talk 101 starts at approximately the 3:50 mark:
