Courtesy of Spike TV, Octagon fans got to see two exciting preliminary bouts prior to tonight’s UFC 119 pay-per-view event. “The Ultimate Fighter” alums C.B. Dollaway and Matt Mitrione were impressive in their wins during the hour-long freebie broadcast.
Best known for being the man dubbed as “Meathead” by his TUF coach Rashad Evans, Mitrione has shown flashes of potential in his two bouts since leaving the show. Tonight he got to fight in front of his hometown crowd in Indianapolis against Joey Beltran, an opponent who had much more to offer up than his previous challenge in Kimbo Slice.
Mitrione was light on his feet throughout the contest, as he picked Beltran apart with punches and kicks for two-plus rounds. When the final bell rang, the judges awarded Mitrione a much deserved unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) victory.
Dollaway was spectacular in his brief outing, as he showed he’s not just a wrestler anymore. After a brief exchange, Dalloway locked in an arm-in guillotine choke. He held the lock and remained patient until something opened up. Once the veteran Doerksen attempted to escape, Dollaway displayed his much improved submission game by getting the veteran to tap at 2:13 in the 1stRound.
Dollaway secured his 11th win of his professional career, including his third straight inside the Octagon.
Both Mitrione and Dollaway made the most of their opportunities on free TV tonight and should warrant stiffer tests in their next outings.
