Strikeforce Dan Henderson Renato Babalu Sobral

As anticipated, Strikeforce officially announced Renato “Babalu” Sobral will be granted his long awaited rematch against Dan Henderson on December 4th inside the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The light heavyweights will headline the Showtime broadcast, which airs at 10PM ET/PT.

“Dan and I have a lot of respect for each other and this will be a great rematch,” Babalu said. “I’m looking forward to fighting another top opponent at Strikeforce and will be going into seclusion for my training camp. When I’m not fighting, my kids come first. But, when I am in camp, training comes first because I am fighting for my kids.”

Moments after narrowly beating Robbie Lawler at “Strikeforce: Los Angeles” this past June, Babalu passed on an opportunity to challenge then-champ and buddy Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal for his crown. Instead, he had redemption on his mind as he called for the MMA legend.

Henderson is looking to rebound from a disappointing debut for the San Jose, California based promotion. After bouncing from the UFC for a more suitable contract with Strikeforce, he was immediately rewarded with a title fight against then-middleweight champ Jake Shields.

Instead of steamrolling the grappler like everyone anticipated, Hendo appeared to gas in the later rounds and suffered a unanimous decision loss for his troubles.

“It’s going to be a great fight. We’ve both progressed a lot since our first fight 10 years ago so it will be interesting to see who’s progressed more,” said Henderson, who defeated Babalu with a majority decision in 2000. “I’m looking forward to putting on a great show for Strikeforce and for the fans.”

Henderson took a majority decision against Babalu over 10 years ago in Japan’s Rings organization.

NFL star turned MMA fighter Herschel Walker will also be making his return to the cage, as will St. Louis native Jesse Finney. No opponents have been named for either contestant.

A special ticket pre-sale for “Strikeforce Insiders” begins this Tuesday at 10AM CT and ends Thursday at 10PM. Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday, October 1st, at 10AM CT online at Ticketmaster.com.
