UFC Lightweight Frankie Edgar

According to MMAFighting.com, lightweight champ Frankie Edgar will make his second title defense on New Year’s Day against a familiar foe. No, it’s not former king BJ Penn again. Thankfully, the Jersey boy will finally be granted his long awaited rematch against undefeated Gray Maynard at UFC 125.

Prior to solidifying his spot atop the 155-pound mountain at UFC 118, Edgar knew Maynard had already earned his next dibs status by dominating Kenny Florian earlier in the evening. After bumping his record to a nearly perfect 10-0 (1 NC) against the former top contender, Maynard proved his time had arrived.

The Xtreme Couture trained fighter is looking for a repeat performance of his lopsided unanimous decision win over Edgar from back in April 2008.

Speaking of nearly flawless, Edgar’s resume reads 13-1 courtesy of Maynard. He’s posted back-to-back drubbings of Penn, dominating the division’s former top dog for arguably 10 consecutive rounds. Edgar has rattled off five straight wins overall.

UFC 125 is expected to take place inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was believed middleweight champion Anderson Silva would headline the card opposite Vitor Belfort, however Silva’s injured rigs will determine if it will happen on this night or the weekend of the Super Bowl.

Here are the fighters rumored/expected to participate in the pay-per-view broadcast:

Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva
Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar (UFC Lightweight Champion)
Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion)
