Outside of the longstanding beef between welterweight champ Nick Diaz and KJ Noons, their rematch on Saturday night didn’t garner significant attention – despite the absence of an Octagon event. While there wasn’t much hoopla coming into the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, the card turned out to be much more entertaining than most anticipated.
Oh yeah, it also didn’t hurt Marloes Coenen made a cameo in the Showtime broadcast (Pictured above).
While Coenen’s 3rdRound armbar over Sarah Kaufman to capture the Womens 135-pound title was fancy, it wasn’t as impressive as what Diaz did on his feet against the boxer in the night’s featured attraction. The controversial post-fight brawler wanted to showcase his evolved striking skills by attempting very few (if any) takedowns, despite the fact a ground attack would have benefited him greatly.
There was some doubt as to who would be donning the welterweight title before Jimmy Lennon Jr. took the mic to announce the verdict. However, the judges not only awarded Diaz a (48-47, 49-47, 49-46) unanimous decision victory, but his eighth consecutive win as well.
Speaking of the three observers sitting cage-side, they also awarded former lightweight title holder Josh Thomson a unanimous decision win over Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante in the night’s co-main event. Oddly, one judge gave Thomson all three rounds – including the final stanza where “The Punk” was on his back for much of the round. Thomson acknowledged the dubious score by suggesting the officials should seek additional training.

“No offense or disrespect since it’s all over with. I’ll beat this guy on the ground or standing up. I just want to show the world my skills. This is mixed martial arts out here.
“It’s hard not to go for the takedown. It makes me look really bad, as if I need to do that. I’ll beat this guy in a boxing match, but I’ll also tap him out on the ground.” – Nick Diaz
“He beat me fair and square. Good job. Whatever the fans want to see. I’ll either do it again [and complete a trilogy with Nick] or work my way back up.” – KJ Noons
“I felt like [expletive] in here. I left it in the judges’ hands and that’s not something I like to do. JZ’s one of the hardest hitting guys I’ve ever been in the cage with. I’ve got nothing but respect for him.” – Josh Thomson
“I want to apologize to Sarah because I really didn’t know. Normally in training, I know when I have to let go. But the referee came in a little too late. I do apologize.” – Marloes Coenen
