“UFC Ultimate Insider” dropped a couple of bombs on MMA fans during this week’s episode. Although it was expected Gray Maynard would headline UFC 125 opposite lightweight king Frankie Edgar, who former interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin would face in the co-main event was a complete mystery. Until now…
Roy Nelson and Carwin both denied the matchup when it was first rumored, as Nelson has been slowly recovering from an August knee surgery. However, it appears his wheel will be fully healed in time to ring in the New Year with the part-time engineer.
Carwin is looking to bounce back from his 2ndRound submission loss to reigning champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 116. Although he had the former WWE superstar on the brink of defeat, Lesnar managed to survive the early onslaught to secure an impressive arm-triangle choke to unify the 265-pound crown.
“Looks like the “official” news is out I am facing Roy Nelson @ #UFC 125. 1-1-11 #TeamCarwin is back,” Carwin tweeted just moments ago.
Maynard is looking for a repeat performance of his lopsided unanimous decision win over Edgar from back in April 2008. He stakes claim to a nearly perfect 10-0 (1 NC) record and schooled former top contender Kenny Florian at UFC 118 to earn the nod.
Speaking of nearly flawless, Edgar’s resume reads 13-1 courtesy of Maynard. In addition to his back-to-back drubbings of BJ Penn, he’s also rattled off five straight wins overall.
Edgar will be entering his third consecutive title fight when he rematches Maynard on January 1st. The scrap marks his second straight as the division’s king.
Here are the fighters rumored/expected to participate inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas:

Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva
Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim
Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
